Teil 2.
13.02.2019
Die 30er Jahre: Politische Krisenzeiten – Kommunismus, Faschismus, Surrealismus
G. W. Pabst, Jean Renoir, Luis Buñuel, Veit Harlan, Leni Riefenstahl (3-Groschenoper, La règle du jeu, Un chien andalou, Opfergang, Tiefland)

Teil 3.
27.02.2019
Die 40er Jahre: Kriegsaufarbeitung und Neustart – You must rember this: Michael Curtiz, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Cocteau, (Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Spellbound, Orphée)

The lectures are in German.

The beginning and the 20ies:
Montage and expressionism – F.M. Murnau, Charles Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Sergei Eisenstein (Nosferatu, The Kid, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Panzerkreuzer Potemkin)

The priority of the image in the age of silent film, Chaplins body humour, Mary Pickford in a double role and Eisensteins montage techniques to mediate political ideas and ideologies.

History(s) of the film

The story(s) of the film are far too diverse and therefore can never be reduced to a single scheme in their complexity, no matter what kind. Therefore, the films of sophisticated cinema (ARTHAUS) should have a place here, which on the one hand can claim validity as important signposts (also for commercial illusion cinema) or on the other hand represent the decade thematically. In addition, the canonical works were often taken, i.e. those that are often talked about. This film history will also be about directors, but at the same time it will explain their position in the whole structure and the directions they represent in detail. Film history must be both critical and able to deconstruct films and their aims from today’s perspective.

This would result in the following approximate planning. Each session, however, begins with an overview of the entire decade. The following films and filmmakers should then be given special focus – in each case from the point of view of getting to know and being able to classify the specific mode of expression of the time. For each session the topic, the directors and finally the film from which examples will be shown will be given.

At the beginning, with F. Nietzsche and W. Benjamin we will briefly explain why and how to deal with history.

The following programme is planned:

Part 2.
13.02.2019
The 30s: political crisis times – communism, fascism, surrealism
G. W. Pabst, Jean Renoir, Veit Harlan, Luis Buñuel, Leni Riefenstahl (3-Groschenoper, La règle du jeu, Un chien andalou, Opfergang, Tiefland).

Part 3.
27.02.2019
The 40s: war processing and restart – You must rember this: Michael Curtiz, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Cocteau, (Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Spellbound, Orphée)
