When we are on assignment alone or with just one other person as documentary film directors – whether during research or an observational „fly on the wall“ project – we face particular challenges in the areas of design, technology and organisation. How do we master these? What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in a small or smallest possible team? How does this affect the conduct of interviews? What considerations should be made when putting together equipment?

On the first day of the workshop, we focus mainly on technical set-ups in the areas of camera and sound. We discuss what effects they have on the creative possibilities and try out practical ways of solving typical problems that arise when you are alone in the field. On the second day, we will focus more intensively on questions specific to the region, analyse existing examples and take time to talk about the participants‘ projects.
