Part I of filmArche’s annual movie history marathon takes you from the ancient tales spun by the first civilizations, through the mysteries of Greek theater, and the cultural marvels of the Renaissance, leading us to the moment when still images first burst into life at the turn of the last century.

With the discovery of cinematic language, silent cinema unveils itself as an almost forgotten realm of wonder, often ablaze with color, brimming with action heroines, tainted by racism, and surprisingly filled with sound-for silent cinema was never truly silent.

Dive into the diverse world of European cinema in the 1900s and 1910s, when attraction evolves into narrative.

Watch as a sleepy California town of orange groves morphs into the world’s largest movie industry in the 1920s, after Europe purged itself in World War I. While Hollywood delivers masterpiece after masterpiece, German, French, and Soviet filmmakers completely revolutionize the language of cinema – until it all comes crashing to a halt in a single day…
