Life during fire - Brazilian contemporary short films

The presidential elections in Brazil will happen on the 2nd of October and there is a lot at stake. Come numerous!

The extreme right-wing current president Jair Bolsonaro is running against the center-left former president Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva. After four years of a disastrous government of Bolsonaro, there is a chance to put the country somehow back on track. The Bolsonaro government was a collection of disasters in all levels: health, environment, economy, culture. The terrible administration during the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in more than 600,000 deaths; the space given to agribusiness and the expansion of the agricultural frontier over the Cerrado and the Amazon; the encouragement of violence and the repudiation of difference, valuing a conservative vision of the „traditional Brazilian family“, which excludes other forms of existence; the increase in poverty and hunger in the country. In addition, the dismantling of culture and the attack on Brazilian cinema show that the Bolsonaro government fears art as an instrument of creativity and inspiration. We put together two programs of contemporary brazilian short films that offer a look into a plural and diverse society and inventive filmmaking practices. On the 28.09 we will watch films that use archive materials, found footage, home movies/pictures in order to create both beautiful and critical views, approaching issues like the military dictatorship; the coloniality of power; indigenous cosmology; the history of enslavement and the place of black communities in society. On the 05.10 we will watch a selection of fictional short films from once marginalized groups that found their way into Brazilian cinema. From subject of study to storytellers: these once unheard voices can now develop their own cinematographic experience, in search for justice, visibility and new utopias, bringing discussions around the themes of anti-colonialism, race, class and gender oppression.

Der rechtsextreme aktuelle Präsident Jair Bolsonaro tritt gegen den Mitte-Links-Ex-Präsidenten Luiz Inácio „Lula“ da Silva an. Nach vier Jahren einer desaströsen Regierung Bolsonaro besteht die Chance, das Land irgendwie wieder auf Kurs zu bringen. Die Regierung Bolsonaro war eine Ansammlung von Katastrophen auf allen Ebenen: Gesundheit, Umwelt, Wirtschaft, Kultur. Die schreckliche Verwaltung während der Coronavirus-Pandemie, die mehr als 600.000 Tote zur Folge hatte; der Raum, der dem Agrobusiness eingeräumt wurde, und die Ausdehnung der landwirtschaftlichen Grenze über den Cerrado und den Amazonas; die Ermutigung zur Gewalt und die Ablehnung von Unterschieden, wobei eine konservative Vision der „traditionellen brasilianischen Familie“ bevorzugt wurde, die andere Formen der Existenz ausschließt; die Zunahme von Armut und Hunger im Land. Darüber hinaus zeigen die Demontage der Kultur und der Angriff auf das brasilianische Kino, dass die Regierung Bolsonaro die Kunst als Instrument der Kreativität und Inspiration fürchtet. Wir haben zwei Programme mit zeitgenössischen brasilianischen Kurzfilmen zusammengestellt, die einen Einblick in eine pluralistische und vielfältige Gesellschaft und erfinderische Filmemacherpraktiken bieten. Am 28.09. werden wir Filme sehen, die Archivmaterial, Found Footage und Home Movies/Fotos verwenden, um sowohl schöne als auch kritische Ansichten zu schaffen, die sich mit Themen wie der Militärdiktatur, der Kolonialität der Macht, der indigenen Kosmologie, der Geschichte der Versklavung und dem Platz schwarzer Gemeinschaften in der Gesellschaft auseinandersetzen. Am 05.10. sehen wir uns eine Auswahl fiktionaler Kurzfilme von einst marginalisierten Gruppen an, die ihren Weg ins brasilianische Kino gefunden haben. Vom Studienobjekt zum Geschichtenerzähler: Diese einst ungehörten Stimmen können nun ihre eigene kinematografische Erfahrung entwickeln, auf der Suche nach Gerechtigkeit, Sichtbarkeit und neuen Utopien, die Diskussionen über die Themen Antikolonialismus, Rassen-, Klassen- und Geschlechterunterdrückung auslösen.
