The main character Potok works in a small theatre as an artist. He is about 30 years old and his life is going basically nowhere. He views himself and his surrounding with scorn. His aimless life changes the moment he meets Black. The couple escapes out of the city but inevitably they are confronted with shallowness and poor taste. Potok sinks to a previous scepticism which ends in a break up of their relationship. Black leaves him and desperate Potok slowly returns to a conciliatory approach to the world which has no place for grand romances.
